Opinion: And now comes my graceful exit
BOSTON — There is something fitting about writing my last column near the first day of a new year. January, after all, is named for the Roman god of beginnings and endings. He looked backward and forward at the same time. So, this morning, do I.
I wish I could find the right language to describe this rite of passage. Retirement, that swoon of a word, just won’t do. The Spanish translation, jubilacion, is a bit over the top for my own mix of feelings.

Opinion: Dupre hiring by New York Post shameful
BOSTON — Things being what they are, I’m delighted when any newspaper is hiring. And when someone lands a job in journalism, I’m ready to pop the cork. But I find it hard to swallow champagne when the New York Post signs on Ashley Dupre.

Opinion: ‘Human’ factor is missing in Copenhagen
LONDON — Yes, there is something more foreign than being offered kippered herring for your breakfast. It’s being offered PopOffsets for your conscience. After seven hours and 3,325 miles, I arrive here, open the paper and discover that a British think tank, Optimum Population Trust, is ready to make me a deal. As a good environmentalist, I can offset the 1.1 tons of carbon emissions spewed into the atmosphere from my trans-Atlantic flight by donating $7 to a family planning program.

Opinion: False choice offered in reform
BOSTON — It was one of those small shocks that come unexpectedly in the wake of a death. Just days after the country had buried Ted Kennedy, Cardinal Sean O’Malley took to his blog to defend himself from critics attacking him for presiding over the funeral of a pro-choice senator.

Opinion: What option for Afghan women?
BOSTON — It’s been 11 years since I looked through a photo album smuggled out of Afghanistan by a brave young woman. “This is a doctor,” she said, pointing to one picture. “This is a teacher.” It was impossible to tell one woman from another under the burqas enforced by their Taliban rulers.

Opinion: Happiness is a work in progress
BOSTON — Not long ago a group of writers decided to publish a book of essays we called: “Feminism Made Me Happy.”It was an in-your-face title, a deliberate attempt to counter the narrative we all knew by heart. The one that kept describing how the women’s movement had left us stressed out, discontented, wrenched from home, hearth, and motherhood to struggle and fail at doing it all.

Opinion: Box office not the only place treating seniors like kids
BOSTON — This story begins, as do so many dramas, at the box office. We are standing in line, three generations defined by a three-tier price structure: senior, adult, child.

Opinion: Nothing beats Texas fandango
BOSTON — I suppose there is something charming about watching conservative politicians in Texas trying so ardently to preserve a same-sex marriage. How else can you explain their passionate opposition to a court ruling last week that would allow a couple legally wed in Massachusetts to be divorced in their state?

Opinion: A question of health, equality
BOSTON — My favorite moment so far in the health care debate was when Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl argued against mandating maternity benefits as part of a basic insurance coverage. “I don’t need maternity care,” he blurted out.At which point, Michigan’s Debbie Stabenow quipped, “I think your mom probably did.” For that matter, so did his wife and daughter. But never mind. We had one brief glimpse into the mind of a politician who doesn’t quite see women’s health concerns as equal to his own.

Opinion: Now then, where was I?
BOSTON — There was a time when I considered myself a champion multitasker. This, of course, was in the days when the Olympic event of technological multitasking was unloading the dishwasher while talking to my mother on the phone.

Opinion: For president and us all, a work in progress
BOSTON — For me, the real Obama moment of this back-to-work season wasn’t the speech before Congress or Wall Street. It was in the Virginia schoolhouse when a ninth-grader asked him a question that had nothing and everything to do with his presidency: “And if you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?”

Opinion: Fear tends to keep workers at peak productivity
BOSTON — There was a New Yorker cartoon last spring picturing a nearly empty galley ship with only two slaves still pulling their oars under the grim eye of the master. In the caption, one of the slaves says to the other: “At this point, I’m just happy to still have a job.”

Opinion: Health care has senior moments
BOSTON — When exactly did the Republicans start operating one of those marketing scams that target the elderly? It was bad enough when Sarah Palin told a bald Facebook lie that there were “death panels” in the plans to reform health care. It was worse to see Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley flunk the “pants on fire” test as he seconded this myth. Republicans planted the fear that President Obama wants to “kill Granny.” Now they want Granny to kill health care reform.

Opinion: Ted Kennedy: His own man
BOSTON — So the family will be gathering again. No, not the family, the clan. That’s the word we always used to describe the Kennedys, as if they were the huge sprawling royal tribe of our political life. And they were.

Opinion: And now, the envelopes, please
BOSTON — Every year at this time, we prepare to celebrate Aug. 26, the anniversary of women’s suffrage, in our own quirky way. We cheerfully distribute the Equal Rites Awards to those who have done their best over the last 12 months to set back the cause of women.
