Police seek information about three cases of car vandalism, theft

Police are on the search for those responsible for breaking into three cars near Dakota Wesleyan University.
In the early morning hours of March 7-9, at least one person forcibly entered three cars parked in lots near DWU and L.B. Williams Elementary School.

Suspended sentence extended; man admits to violating probation

A Howard man who originally received a suspended prison sentence for possessing amphetamine had the suspension extended after pleading guilty to violating his probation.
Matthew L. Tomes, 22, was originally arrested in 2007 for possessing amphetamine, two ounces of marijuana or less and drug paraphernalia. He received a suspended sentence of three years in the state penitentiary as well as fines, court and prosecution costs.

State prison time given to local man for manufacturing methamphetamine PressPass

A man who pleaded guilty to manufacturing methamphetamine in Mitchell will serve less than a year of state penitentiary time.
Justin Fuller, 22, of Mitchell, received a five-year penitentiary sentence for manufacturing methamphetamine in a trailer house at 1201 E. First, No. 21, in November 2009.

Man sentenced to penitentiary after pleading guilty to probation violations PressPass

After pleading guilty to six probation violations, a Mitchell man on Tuesday was sentenced to spend nearly three years in the state penitentiary.
Jeffery K. McDermond, 21, of Mitchell, was given a fiveyear penitentiary sentence after pleading guilty to six probation violations that took place between April 14 and August 17 last year.

Juror in death trial explains decision on ruling PressPass

A member of the jury that found a Rosebud woman guilty of first-degree manslaughter in the stabbing death of her boyfriend said the jury determined manslaughter was the only charge on which she could be convicted.
An eight-man, four-woman jury on Monday convicted Jennifer Ladd, 37, of the charge and acquitted her of first-degree murder, the charge on which she had been indicted. She killed Louis Fast Horse, 43, Rosebud, with a large knife in February 2009 during a visit to a Lake Andes home.

Woman found guilty of manslaughter PressPass

LAKE ANDES — A Charles Mix County jury on Monday found a Rosebud woman guilty of first-degree manslaughter in the February 2009 death of her boyfriend in Lake Andes.
Jennifer Ladd, 37, can still receive up to life in prison for the death of Louis Fast Horse, 43, also of Rosebud. While first-degree murder is a mandatory life sentence, that is the maximum allowed for manslaughter.

BWS defense disputed by expert witness for prosecution PressPass

LAKE ANDES — A University of British Columbia professor on Thursday disputed a defense expert’s theory that Jennifer Ladd suffered from battered women’s syndrome.
George Dutton, Vancouver, a psychology expert who has worked with battered women’s syndrome cases for 30 years, said a pattern of entering into multiple abusive relationships is not a trait of BWS. During Ladd’s murder trial Thursday in Lake Andes, he described its characteristics as anxiety, tendency for abuse and avoiding thoughts of men.
