Celebratory event unites Bridgewater, Emery as district EMERY — Roughly 295 students and 40 staff from two towns came together Thursday morning to mark the start of a new era.
It’s the first year for the new Bridgewater-Emery School District.
Several school buses and vans filled with students and most of the staff converged on 432nd Avenue off Highway 262 east of Emery — the dividing line between the old districts.

Mediation attempt fails in Platte-Geddes dispute PressPass

A mediation session to resolve an impasse between negotiators for the school board and Platte-Geddes Educational Association was unsuccessful this week.

PLATTE — Negotiators from the Platte-Geddes School Board and Platte-Geddes Education Association will meet Tuesday with a state mediator to resolve a deadlock with the 2010-11 teachers contract.
Brad Peterson, lead negotiator for the education association and a high school math teacher, said the main issues involve teachers wanting a one-time $250 stipend to help cover the cost of a $500 increase in health insurance premiums for singles, and the school board wanting to set a higher penalty for teachers who break their contracts between August and spring. Contracts are typically renewed each spring.

Mitchell student’s writing recognized  at national level For Mitchell Middle School student Heather Franklin, writing is an escape, a necessity and a talent.
“It’s cool to know what other people think and what other people are dealing with. It just creates this whole new world for us to go to,” she said.
Franklin, who has been writing since the fifth grade, entered the 2010 National Council of Teachers of English Promising Young Writers Program — a contest that aims to stimulate and recognize writing talents and emphasize the importance of writing skills among eighth-grade students.

Race issues flare up at Chamberlain school PressPass

CHAMBERLAIN — Racial tensions in the Chamberlain school rose Wednesday after four students left school because of a controversy surrounding homemade T-shirts proclaiming “White Pride World Wide.”
Superintendent Tim Mitchell said the incident is under investigation by school officials.
“There has to be a reason why these kids made these shirts and showed up,” Mitchell said. “We just don’t know what it is yet.”

Ilibagiza’s powerful message was about peace, faith and forgiveness.
