WILTZ: Let's climb out of the ol' walleye rut
Bear with me for a moment today as I get a wee bit philosophical. Back on Oct. 26, 2011, I wrote about the opening day of pheasant season I shared with friends. I said that we relished the day and pondered how many more like experiences we would enjoy before time threw us a curve ball.

WILTZ: Will our pheasants rebound? It all depends
The news media, including newspapers, is beginning to release outlooks for the coming pheasant opener on Oct. 20. I don’t know how much truth is included in any of them, but the birds have certainly had to cope with drought and excessive heat in parts of our reading area, and I think the availability of moisture during critical periods will be the determining factor.

Thousands of fish die as Midwest streams heat up during drought
About 40,000 shovelnose sturgeon were killed in Iowa last week as water temperatures reached 97 degrees. Nebraska fishery officials said they’ve seen thousands of dead sturgeon, catfish, carp, and other species in the Lower Platte River, including the endangered pallid sturgeon.

WILTZ: Hamlet might have said, ‘There’s something rotten in Washington’
Do fish have a sense of taste? Can they enjoy biting into YUM or GULP, the artificial bait that feels like it’s alive? In my opinion, they don’t like them as well as live night crawlers or bait fish, but these live bait substitutes are a close second.

WILTZ: Some final thoughts on the Reindeer Lake trip
A few weeks ago, this column included a photo of some young men holding a flathead catfish that came from the Randall Dam tail waters. A number of readers have commented that that fish should have weighed 20-25 more pounds. I feel that their observations are correct. The fish beneath the Randall Dam are starving. Usually seagulls work the tailrace for baitfish. Not so this year.

A column about some neat kids
For the past month I’ve been trying to put together an informative piece on good bank fishing places within a reasonable radius of Mitchell. Considering the size of our aging population, good spots are sorely lacking. While some communities including Mitchell and Chamberlain have built handicap-accessible fishing piers, the situation needs a lot more attention. Wagner also plans to build such a facility.

WILTZ: Would Ed Lemmon ‘pull our legs’ just a wee bit?
Though I enjoy watching TV anglers fish in exotic places for species I’ve never caught, I also watch the TV fishing shows to learn of techniques that might work well on my home waters. I watched such a program last night, and I’m anxious to try it in the Fort Randall Dam tailrace.

WILTZ: I did a poor job — I should have called TIPS
We had been fishing beneath the dam at Pickstown. It was late morning when we pulled the boat from the water and rolled up to the area near the fish cleaning station. As we fitted the cover over the boat, Jerry commented, “I can tell from here that the walleyes they’re cleaning are too small.” Yes, some of the fish that morning had been tempting. That same morning we had thrown back two sauger and a walleye that came within an eighth inch of the 15-inch legal minimum.
