Young Cubs amateur baseball team expects state berth
SALEM — Despite the Salem Cubs amateur baseball team’s youth this year, manager Roger Duxbury has no doubt in his mind that his team is going to be able to make it to the state tournament. The Cubs are 11-5 overall and 10-5 in Cornbelt League action. Duxbury said one of the challenges that come along with being a young team is not being able to bounce back from errors as quickly as some other seasoned baseball players are able to.

Owls’ McLagan records walk-off hit, no-hitter in memorable week
WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Mitch McLagan had a week on the baseball diamond he won’t soon forget. McLagan recorded an RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning to lead the Wessington Springs Owls amateur baseball team to a 7-6 win over Pierre last Tuesday and decided to top that on Sunday as he pitched a no-hitter in a 10-0 win over Plankinton in Wessington Springs. “There were a couple pitches I was overthrowing and trying to do too much,” McLagan said. “I wasn’t real nervous until there were two outs (in the seventh).”
