WILTZ: Will our pheasants rebound? It all depends
The news media, including newspapers, is beginning to release outlooks for the coming pheasant opener on Oct. 20. I don’t know how much truth is included in any of them, but the birds have certainly had to cope with drought and excessive heat in parts of our reading area, and I think the availability of moisture during critical periods will be the determining factor.

WILTZ: Have you ever heard of Pheasant City
It’s part of the wisdom that comes with age. When I’m going to spend some time outdoors, I pay attention to the weather forecast, and I put considerable thought into appropriate dress. Our vehicle is also equipped for a worst case scenario.

WILTZ: We’re in the midst of spring turkey season!
Mid-April finds us in the peak of our South Dakota spring turkey season, and the outdoor TV channels have named South Dakota the best place in the nation to hunt turkeys. Fortunately for hunters, many ranchers see their turkeys as vermin, and they actually encourage the hunting of these big birds! With a courteous request, hunting privileges can be had by knocking on doors.

WILTZ: Would anyone go camping today without without their iPod
As I sat down at the keyboard this morning, Betsy asked me what I was going to write about.

WILTZ: Remembering Canada — the way it was
A while back I recounted some of the adventures of Olive Reamer, a young widow left alone in the British Columbia wilderness with three small children. An Avon reader informed me that Olive Reamer Fredrickson had written a book, The Silence of the North, and I mentioned that I would make an effort to read it. The Wagner library obtained the book for me, and it proved to be a great story.

WILTZ: My grandkids are musky addicts!
In last week’s column, I began telling you about a late June fishing trip to Ontario’s Vermilion Bay area with my grandchildren and son-in-law, Tom.

WILTZ: A first hunt - It was as good as it gets
On Nov. 9-10, my Wisconsin grandkids – Sam, 15, Grace, 12, and Gabrielle, 12, went on what was a first hunt for the girls. They were accompanied by their dad Tom and his friend Steve, along with grandma Betsy and me. We hunted the Corson County ranch I’ve hunted for the last 43 years.

WILTZ: Hoping a fishing magazine calls
Like all of you, I have my dreams. In one of them, the In-Fisherman magazine people call me about a fishing technique they read about in my column.

WILTZ: Are we literally poisoning ourselves?
Having lost good hunting friends in the not-so-distant past, and having current friends who are suffering, the subject of cancer has more than touched me.

WILTZ: Catching lake trout on the Reindeer Lake trip
At 5 a.m. on June 14, Vern Carpenter and I left Armour, in my Dodge pickup. Our destination, 1,225 miles due north, was Lynn Lake, Manitoba. Though I had driven to the end of the road in both Ontario and Saskatchewan, I had never headed north out of Winnipeg, and I was looking forward to it. At Lynn Lake we would board a float plane and fly to Reindeer Lake’s Tate Island, the location of our lodge near the west bank and about half way up the huge lake that runs north and south.

WILTZ: Some final thoughts on the Reindeer Lake trip
A few weeks ago, this column included a photo of some young men holding a flathead catfish that came from the Randall Dam tail waters. A number of readers have commented that that fish should have weighed 20-25 more pounds. I feel that their observations are correct. The fish beneath the Randall Dam are starving. Usually seagulls work the tailrace for baitfish. Not so this year.

WILTZ: Some thoughts about the Colorado shooting spree
When I fish from a boat, I don’t wear my hearing aids for fear of losing one.

WILTZ: Let's climb out of the ol' walleye rut
Bear with me for a moment today as I get a wee bit philosophical. Back on Oct. 26, 2011, I wrote about the opening day of pheasant season I shared with friends. I said that we relished the day and pondered how many more like experiences we would enjoy before time threw us a curve ball.

WILTZ: Hen chicks kicked aside in hatcheries
In last week’s column, I talked about the prognosis for the 2012 South Dakota pheasant season. I’ve received much feedback, most of which supports hot and dry conditions being better than cold and wet. In general, the ringneck hunting should be better than last year’s.

WILTZ: Are you ready today for a blast from the past?
I don’t believe the magnitude of the deer die off, primarily caused by EHD and transmitted by the bite of a midge, can be exaggerated. I’ve read about Hutchinson County being a focal point. Based on what friends and neighbors have told me, southern Charles Mix County falls into that same category.

WILTZ: Are you ready for some mule tales?
I still feel badly about it as I don’t like making mistakes. Jerry and I were trolling Ratlin’ Raps (we’ve found these to be very effective in our Missouri on walleyes, smallmouth bass and northern pike) along the shoreline in about 8 feet of water. We had earlier fished the fastwater, but that action was slow so we decided to cover another area. In just a short time we had caught a few respectable northern pike when Jerry said, “Fish on!”

WILTZ: What will I find come Saturday?
Never before have I stepped into a field on the opening day of pheasant season without knowing what we were going to find bird-wise. This year will be different.

WILTZ: Coming close to being the victim of a serious accident
I don’t normally hunt pheasants with a large group, but a good friend invited me to join a group of his associates, and I felt honored to be there. I believe that there is always a higher element of risk with a larger group, and this hunt was no exception even though a number of veteran hunters participated.

WILTZ: The Lodge at Chama under a magnifying glass
Late last summer, I wrote that one didn’t have to be a person of means to enjoy an elk hunt as a cow elk hunt can be had for a small fraction of the cost of a bull elk hunt.
