Time capsule opened

Mitchell Area Historical Society President Lyle Swenson, left, and Muth Electric owner Dick Muth open a time capsule Friday morning at Muth Electric headquarters that was found in the cornerstone of a former Muth Electric building on Fourth Avenue in downtown Mitchell. The capsule was placed there in 1909 when construction on the then Odd Fellows building was completed.

  • Inside the capsule were several newspapers, coins, a ring and a military ball ticket, among other things. The downtown building, which most recently served as part of the former Muth Electric headquarters until Muth constructed a new building in northern Mitchell, is being demolished. The other, newer portion of the former Muth headquarters will remain standing.
