Ruth Calhoon, 88, Winner, died Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Winner Regional Long Term Care Facility, Winner.

Ruth Calhoon, 88, Winner, died Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Winner Regional Long Term Care Facility, Winner.

She was born on May 9, 1924.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Christ Lutheran Church, Winner. Burial will be in Winner City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the church with a 7 p.m. prayer service.

Ruth Oline (Andersen) Calhoon was born on a farmstead in Tripp Country.

She was one of six children born to Carl and Elna (Madsen) Andersen.

Ruth was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church.

She attended Sunnyside Elementary School and graduated from Winner High School in 1943.

Following graduation, Ruth worked at the Farmers State Bank.

Ruth was united in marriage to Merle Calhoon at the Winner Trinity Lutheran Parsonage on Feb. 9, 1947.

During their 66 years of marriage, they farmed and ranched in the Ideal area and continued in the Hamill community where they raised their family.

Ruth was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church, including several years as Sunday School superintendent and teacher.

They retired from farming in 1972 and moved to Winner.

Following this move, she worked at the Outlaw Trading Post for many years.

She belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary, Tripp County Library Board and a lifetime member of the DAVA.

Following her retirement, she was a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program.

Ruth was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and her family will always cherish her memory.

She is survived by her husband, Merle; two sons: Dennis (Kathy), Winner; and Kelly (Suzanne), Centerton, Ark.; one daughter, Karen (Dan) Long, Omaha, Neb.; seven grandchildren: Michelle (Travis) Carpenter, Mitchell; Deonne (Jeff) Portner, Tea; Darnele (Mitch) Smith, Harrisburg; Kelsi Long, Omaha; Kirbi Long, Las Vegas; Ryan (Jessica) Calhoon, Dallas, Texas; and Kaitlin Long, Omaha. She has seven great-grandchildren: Mason, Cade and Sutton Carpenter; Dawson and Presley Portner; Lily Calhoon and Oliver Smith. She is also survived by one brother, Carl Andersen, Williamsville, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law: Eloise Andersen, Lombard, Ill.; and Harriet Andersen, Sun City, Ariz.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, three siblings: Esther Korab, Robert and Harry; brother-in-law, Edwin Korab; and sister-in-law, Joan Andersen.

Ruth is now walking hand in hand with those who have gone before her. Happy, you, pain free and breathing easy.
