Donald “Slick” Larson, 81, Huron, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron.

He was born March 10, 1931.

His funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at American Lutheran Church with burial in Riverside Cemetery and military honors by the Huron Veterans Council.

Visitation with family present will be Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home; or Thursday afternoon one hour prior to the service at the church.

Donald E. Larson, son of Milo and Harriet (Vickers) Larson, was born in Mitchell.

He grew up on a farm near Mount Vernon and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1949.

Following his formal education he worked on the family farm until April 29, 1951, when he entered the U.S. Air Force. He served stateside and the Azores Islands until September 1952. He was transferred to England where he served until his honorable discharge on March 17, 1955.

He returned to the Mount Vernon area where he worked on the farm and raised cattle.

On Aug. 16, 1958, Don married Sylvia Jaton in Mitchell. They moved to a farm in the Mitchell/Mount Vernon area where they lived and worked until 1964, at which time they moved to a farm near Carthage. In 1979 Don retired from farming and began working for Asphalt Paving Company in Huron. In 1980 they moved to Huron.

He officially retired in 1993. He did, however, maintain his involvement in farming by helping out his son, Mark, on the family farm.

He was a member of American Lutheran Church; past member of American Legion Coacher-Goetsch Post No. 18 in Mitchell; and American Legion William Reaves Post No. 7 and VFW Forrest McMullen Post No. 1776, both in Huron.

Family was very important to Don and he cherished the time that he could spend with his grandchildren. Farming was his main job in life, however, it was also his main “hobby.” He has always been a sociable person who enjoyed the time that he could be with people, especially for coffee with his friends, or at the sale barns.

Don is survived by two sons, Mark (Gayle) Larson of Iroquois, and Robert (VickiLee) Larson of Belle Fourche; one daughter, Kim (Rod) Daly of Huron; eight grandchildren, Cashayne Larson and special friend Chad Bogh, Shalace (Jason) Bell, Shad Larson and special friend Lacey Eckmann, Cody Daly and special friend Amanda Schulz, Carissa Daly, Tyler Roden, Trenten Larson, and Teneesha Larson; four great-granddaughters, Tessah Cronin, Ashtyn Cronin, Taelyn Larson, and Haylah Bell; two sisters, Lois Bamberg of Mitchell, and Mary Lou Larson of St. Paul, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sylvia on Sept. 17, 1999; and one brother-in-law, LeRoy Bamberg.
