He was born Jan. 5, 1962.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Lake Andes. Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Lake Andes.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Koehn Bros. Funeral Home, Lake Andes, with a 7 p.m. prayer service.

He was born in Platte to Howard and Gerardina (Carrie) Petersen.

Harlen lived most of his life in Lake Andes. He graduated from Andes Central High School in 1980. He attended Mitchell Vo-Tech for automotive mechanics in 1982. After getting his degree, he worked a few years at the Lake Andes Co-op. Then he and Tom Thomson owned and operated LA Motor & Tire for over four years, then sold the station. He went on to work for the Charles Mix County Highway Department.

Harlen met Misty Svatos on June 3, 1989. Together they enjoyed walleye fishing and hunting for the biggest buck. He always enjoyed visiting with friends and living life to its fullest.

On Jan. 5, 2009, the dear Lord blessed Harlen and Misty with an angel, a daughter, LaShae Marie Petersen. This little girl thinks the world of her Daddy. Harlen loved LaShae more than she will ever know.

Thankful for sharing his life are his daughter, LaShae Petersen; his wife, Misty, of Lake Andes; his mother, Gerardina (Carrie) and step-father, George Hazuka; a sister, Sheryl Gravatt and husband, Glendon ; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Harlen was preceded in death by his father, Howard Petersen; father-in-law, R.G. Svatos; aunt, Myrle Wood and husband, Floyd; paternal grandparents Herman and Esther Petersen; maternal grandparents, Jake and Margaret Van Maanen; and aunt, Shirley Van Maanen .
