Paul Kramer, 78, Platte, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, in hospice care at his home.
He was born on Nov. 22, 1934.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Platte. Burial, with military honors by Campbell-Timmerman American Legion Post No. 115 of Platte, will be in Bohemian Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Wagner.
Mount Funeral Home, Platte, is assisting with arrangements.
Paul Leroy Kramer was born on the family farm near Naper , Neb., to parents Peter and Mabel (Cunningham) Kramer.
He was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Naper. Paul attended Naper school.
In March 1954, Paul enlisted in the Army, was stationed at Ft. Lee, Va., and served in Japan.
At age 23, Paul pursued a career in barbering at the Sioux City Barber School.
Paul met and married Joan Petrik in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Fairfax, on June 4, 1958.
Paul barbered in Lake Andes and Watertown. They moved to Mitchell, where Paul worked at The O.K. Barbershop before establishing his own barbering business.
Paul’s Barber Shop opened in 1959 in the wonderful community of Platte, where the couple made their permanent home.
Upon retirement due to illness in December 2012, Paul received many cards from customers, some speculating how many grain bins it would take to contain all the hair cut in his barbershop over the years. Everyone who knew Paul knows how much he loved his work behind the barber chair; he never failed to share a joke or two before his customer would depart.
One of his favorite times of the week was breakfast with the guys at Shorty’s in Platte early on Saturday mornings.
Paul was an active member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, S.D. Barbers Association Board and St. Peter’s Cemetery Board. He helped maintain St. Peter’s Cemetery and also helped manage the Legion Hall rentals.
Paul also was a founding member and volunteer for the Platte Volunteer Ambulance Service and he was also a volunteer for the Platte Volunteer Fire Service for many years.
Paul was a devoted husband, father and grandpa. His first priority was always his family and he was especially proud of his grandchildren. He also had a love for woodworking and playing the harmonica.
After a battle of prolonged illness, Paul died peacefully at his home in Platte with his wife and children by his side.
Paul is survived by: his wife of more than 54 years, Joan Kramer, Platte; his son, Randy (Rebecca) Kramer, Rapid City; his daughter, Cindy (Jim) Jandrain, Omaha, Neb.; 10 grandchildren: Brandon (Michaela) and Austin Kramer and Christine, Dominic, Nicholas, Matthew, Mary, Anne, Joe and Clare Jandrain; a brother, George Kramer, Las Vegas; a sister, Shirley ( Orlin) Higgins, Armour; two sisters-in-law: Mary Lou (Kenneth) Hofmeister, Parker; and Marge Kramer, Wagner; along with many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, four sisters: Kathrine (Melvin) Parlet, Stella (Bill) Hermsen, an infant sister, Clara Marie; and Mary, stillborn twin of Frank; two brothers: Frank Kramer and Joe ( Alyce ) Kramer; and a sister-in-law, Geraldine Kramer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to: St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 321 S. Ohio Ave., Platte, S.D., 57369; or Wings and Hope Cancer Fund, P.O. Box 192, Platte, S.D., 57369; or the family would greatly appreciate a mass said for Paul in your hometown parish.
