Luverne Joseph “Lou” Sudbeck, 82, Dimock, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls.

Luverne Joseph “Lou” Sudbeck, 82, Dimock, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls.

He was born on Feb. 25, 1929.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Dimock. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the church with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service.

Arrangements are by Koehn Brothers Funeral Home, Parkston.

Luverne “Lou” Joseph Sudbeck was born to Peter and Dorothy (Kathol) Sudbeck in Dimock.

He was united in marriage to Lorraine Thelen on Aug. 29, 1950.

In 1950, he began farming and, in 1956, he took over the family farm near Dimock, retiring in 1996.

Lou was a member of the NFO and Knights of Columbus, coached baseball for five years and was a lifetime member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Dimock.

He loved playing cards and all sporting events. He was an avid baseball fan and shared his love for baseball with all his children and grandchildren.

He played for Dimock with his five brothers and continued his love of the game by watching his sons and grandsons play.

Lou was awarded the lifetime award from the S.D. Amateur Baseball Association.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, Parkston; seven children: Susan (James) White, Nashville, Tenn.; Thomas (friend Tami) Sudbeck, Mitchell; James (Tammy) Sudbeck, Dimock; William (Gerry) Sudbeck, Parkston; Michael (Deb) Sudbeck, Mount Vernon; Pamela (Duane) Stadlman, Parkston; and Douglas (Karen) Sudbeck, Dimock; 15 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two sisters: Lorraine (Don) Schoenfelder, Parkston; and Joan (Art) Schlumpberger, Harrisonville, Mo.; two brothers: Dennis (Marilyn) Sudbeck, Sioux Falls; and Donald (Marion) Sudbeck, Dimock; a sister-in-law, Ruth Sudbeck, Parkston; a brother-in-law, Jim Freeman, Mitchell; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters: Valerie Sudbeck, Helen Bower and Shirley Umstead; three brothers: Alvin Sudbeck, Ervin Sudbeck and Norbert Sudbeck; three sisters-in-law: Kathy Sudbeck, Marcella Sudbeck and Marlys Freeman; a brother-in-law, Vincent “Bing” Bowar; and a daughter-in-law, Beverly Sudbeck.
