Violet Larson, 95, Mitchell, formerly of Mount Vernon, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2013, at Firesteel Healthcare Center, Mitchell.
She was born on Dec. 15, 1917.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Salem Lutheran Church, Mount Vernon. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bittner Funeral Chapel, Mitchell.
Violet Kathyleen Ryg was born in Wallace Township, near Ottawa, Ill., to Martin Ryg and Sophia Amundson Ryg.
She grew up on a farm in Wallace Township. She graduated from Ottawa Public High School in 1936.
After high school, she continued her education at Lutheran Bible School in Fergus Falls, Minn.
Violet and Alfred were married on Nov. 11, 1939, at Freedom Lutheran Church near Ottawa.
The couple briefly farmed west of Mount Vernon on the Loon homestead from 1939 until they moved into Mount Vernon in 1944, where Violet lived until January 2002, when she moved to Wesley Acres in Mitchell.
She lived at Firesteel Nursing Home from 2004 until her death.
Following Alfred’s death in 1959, Violet worked at the Mount Vernon Post Office until she retired in 1992.
She also worked as a teacher’s aide for the Mount Vernon school system and as a nurse’s aide at Storla Nursing Home.
She is survived by her children: Mary Larson, Ray (Linda) Larson, Jean (Dennis) Haselhorst and Alan (Donna) Larson; her eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, a brother, her loving husband, Alfred; a son, Ronald; and a daughter, Ruth.
The family requests memorial donations to Salem Lutheran Church in lieu of flowers.
