Vernon G. Stevens, 97, Beaverton, Ore., died Monday, Nov. 4, 2012, at his daughter’s home in Beaverton.
Vernon G. Stevens, 97, Beaverton, Ore., died Monday, Nov. 4, 2012, at his daughter’s home in Beaverton.
He was born on March 6, 1915.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Kimball Protestant Parish, Kimball. Burial will be in Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Saturday.
Aloha Funeral Home and Crematory, Beaverton, is handling arrangements.
He was born to Harry and Grace (Dickey) Stevens in Grant County.
He was raised on the family farm near Milbank.
As a young man, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1935 to 1936, and later worked on farms in South Dakota and Iowa.
He served in the U.S. Army in World War II from February 1941 to November 1945 and was discharged with the rank of staff sergeant. He was stationed at various Army posts in the U.S. and overseas in the China-Burma-India Theater.
He married Virginia R. Heitzinger at Manchester, Mo., on Dec. 19, 1942.
Eleven children were born to their marriage.
He and his family moved to Kimball in 1950.
He resided there until 2010, when he relocated to Beaverton, Ore.
He is survived by six sons and three daughters: Ron, Bend, Ore.; Greg and wife Janet, Frederick, Md.; David, Albany, Ore.; Jeff and wife Chris, Spokane, Wash.; Scott, Union City, Calif.; Lee and wife Cynthia, Hillsboro, Ore.; Carolyn Downs and husband Ron, Sioux Falls; Roberta Pfeiffer and husband Jerry, Beaverton; and Claudia Peterson and husband Erik, Sandy, Ore. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; two children: Mark and Marcia; his parents and four brothers.
