Harland Osterberg was born in Salem to Levi and Myrtle ( Lindell) Osterberg . He grew up on a farm north of Salem and lived his entire life in the Salem area. He attended country school and graduated from Salem High School. While in high school he became known as “Curly” and the name stuck with him his entire life.
Curly worked for Wulff Inc. for many years doing farm work, custom work, driving semi and mechanic work. He was also very handy when it came to repairing small engines. He later worked at the Salem golf course and was an active member of the McCook Country Club.
He was a member of the Salem Evangelical Covenant Church until its closure and was recently faithfully attending the Salem United Church. He loved music and used his high tenor voice to its fullest in church choirs and small groups including male quartets, which included singing with his three brothers.
Curly enjoyed bowling, golfing and his yearly trips to western South Dakota for deer hunting. Many will remember his many trips around Salem in his little red pickup and his sense of humor.
Even though Curly had no children of his own, he loved being with and watching the kids, whether it be in church or at family functions. His nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews were very special to him.
He is survived by one brother, Ertis (Lynn) of Sioux Falls; two sisters, Bonadel (Vernon) Anderson of Akeley, Minn. and Virjean (Darrell) Kirby of Spencer; sister-in-law, Myra Osterberg of Salem; and many nieces and nephews, great- nieces and nephews, and great-great- nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, two brothers, Myron and Leland, sister-in-law Eva and an infant niece, Agnes.
