Carl Gjoraas, 93, Parkston, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at Avera Bormann Manor in Parkston.
He was born July 22, 1919.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Armour with burial following in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery at Armour. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 5 to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Armour .
Carl was born in Douglas County to Ingvald and Jette ( Grav) Gjoraas. He was baptized on Aug. 11, 1919, at Morningside Lutheran Church and confirmed at Platte Valley Evangelical Lutheran Church at Geddes by G. Sigfrid Swensson on Sept. 3, 1933. Carl, as a young man, worked for the Joe Florey family in Armour. It was there that he met his future wife, Laura Schwaderer.
They were married on Aug. 15, 1941, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Armour by Rev. G. C. Kohlstedt. They farmed near Delmont for 40 years until moving into Armour in 1985.
He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and during his life served on various boards and committees. Carl, as a young boy, experienced the difficult times brought on by the financial crash of 1929 and the dust bowl years of 1930 to 1936.
Farming and caring for livestock was Carl’s vocation and he had a genuine love and dedication for this calling. He loved to visit about anything involved with farming. He loved to discuss land prices, hog and cattle prices, machinery prices and yes, we dare not forget the weather. He could get to the point of almost worrying about such issues and then would finally smile and admit that all things are in the hands of the Lord. Carl’s wife and helpmate passed away on March 16, 2008.
Grateful for having shared his life are his four children: Ronald (Blanche) Gjoraas, Sioux Falls; Karen (Jerry) Sullivan, Denver; Noreen Theobald, Los Angeles; and Wayne (Laurie) Gjoraas, Placentia, Calif.; 11 grandchildren: Kevin Gjoraas; Allen Gjoraas, Suzanne Bosch; Sara Mulroy; Kelly Fogarty; Peter Theobald; Nicole Rude; Timothy Theobald; Amber Gjoraas; Gina Bravata Gonzalez; and Kari Schusler ; 22 great-grandchildren; and many wonderful nieces, nephews, and friends he has met along the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Laura; a brother, Harold; five sisters: Marie Gustad, Ingrid Tronvold, Jenny Paul, Juliet Griffin and Clara Hochhalter ; and three infant siblings.
