Harry Sly, Hot Springs

Harry Thomas “H.T.” Sly, 90, Hot Springs, died Friday, April 8, 2011, at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Hot Springs. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home Auditorium with Chaplain Loyd Nielson officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Platte Cemetery, Platte, with military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 115. Arrangements are under the direction of McColley’s Chapel of the Hills, Hot Springs.

He was born on Aug. 3, 1920, on a farm in Platte to Earl H. and Lucy H. (Mills) Sly.

He was raised on the farm and attended the Carroll Township Country School for eight years and then attended Platte High School, graduating in 1938.

In 1942, he and his father opened Earl H. Sly and Sons in animal agriculture.

He served in the U.S. Navy in the Naval Construction Battalion from March 1945 to May 1946.

He returned to Platte and worked with his father on the farm.

In 1948, he began farming and ranching and, in 1968, took his father’s beef cattle on share.

In 1977, he bought the homeplace and farmed until 1986.

He served as Carroll Township clerk for many years and was involved in soil conservation with the Farm Bureau of Charles Mix County.

He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 115 in Platte and belonged to the Crop Improvement Association.

On May 15, 1992, he moved into the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home.

He is survived by a brother, Kenneth; a sister, Beth Chastka; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Joy Knudsen; and a nephew.
