Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Clausen Funeral Home, Burke. Burial will be at a later date.
He was born on July 26, 1948, in Burke to Charles “Bud” and Esther (Nachtigal) Smikle.
He spent most of his childhood on the family ranch north of Herrick.
He graduated from Burke High School in 1966 and from University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1971.
He spent one year of college at University of Hawaii in Honolulu.
After graduation, he worked with the U.S. Army Audit Agency as an accountant and lived in Germany for a year.
On Sept. 28, 1974, he married Patty Plesetz.
They returned to Herrick to run the family ranch. They lived there for 35 years.
He is survived by his wife, two daughters: Dawn and husband Cory, Crossville, Tenn.; and Cathy, Scottsdale, Ariz.; one son, Jon and wife Abby, Herrick; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
