Roger Sherwood, Pierre

Roger Lee Sherwood, 67, Pierre, formerly of Wood, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, at Maryhouse, Pierre. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at United Church of Christ, Wood. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Wood. Visitation will be 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday, with a 6 p.m. prayer service, at Isburg Funeral Chapel, Pierre.

He was born on April 29, 1943, in Winner to Glen E. and Gwendolyn J. (O’Connor) Sherwood.

He grew up on the family ranch northeast of Wood.

He attended Springview Country School. He worked on the ranch with his father and raised cattle, sheep and registered quarter horses.

On Oct. 25, 1961, he married Judith “Judy” Hix at Congregational Church, Fort Pierre.

He worked various jobs, including road construction, which took the family to different locations. In the early spring of 1967, he moved his family back to the ranch to help his father.

After leaving the ranch in 1977, he worked for Benning Construction, Spearfish, as a finish blade operator.

He is survived by three children: Brenda VanTassel and husband Jim, Midland; Rita Cleveland, Fort Pierre; and Theresa “Terri” Woods and husband Brian, Loveland, Colo.; five grandchildren, three brothers: Gene, Whitewood; Bob and wife Mary; and Justin, all of Wood; and one sister, Melody Clark, Blackfoot, Idaho.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant nephew.
