Lyman James Miller, 88, Parker, died Thursday, June 17, 2010, at VA Medical Center, Sioux Falls.
Funeral services were on June 21, 2010, at Grace Lutheran Church, Parker. Burial with military honors was in Rosehill Cemetery, Parker.

Funeral services were on June 21, 2010, at Grace Lutheran Church, Parker. Burial with military honors was in Rosehill Cemetery, Parker.

Arrangements were under the direction of Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home, Parker.

He was born on Oct. 2, 1921, to W.R. and Estella (Wilson) Miller at Ryder, N.D.

When he was 2 ½ years old, his family moved to a farm near Sioux Falls. He attended country schools and was a student at Harrisburg High School for two years when his family moved to a farm west of Parker.

In 1940, he graduated from Parker High School and began working on the family farm.

In September 1942, he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Australia, New Guinea, Hawaii and the Philippines. In November 1944, he was wounded in New Guinea and was awarded the Purple Heart.

Following his discharge in November 1945, he was employed at John Morrell and Co. in Sioux Falls.

On March 4, 1947, he married Maurine Osthus in Centerville.

He and his wife moved to a farm north of Parker.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council, council president and an usher for many years. He also served on the District 13 school board and the Farmers Union board. He was a lifetime member of VFW and DAV.

He is survived by his wife, six children: Les and wife Bev; and Marilyn Plooster, all of Sioux Falls; Ken and wife Jeanine; and Marvin and wife Paula, all of Parker; Harlan, Mitchell; and Tim, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Melvin and William; a sister Cora Mae Schoenwald; a son-in-law, Norman Plooster; and four brothers-in-law: James Osthus, Arnold Christofferson, Leon Brende and Conrad Johnson.
