Paul Edward Folkerts, 66, Mitchell, died Friday, May 28, 2010, at Sanford Hospice Cottage, Sioux Falls.
A private graveside service will be on Wednesday. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Will Funeral Chapel, Mitchell.

Paul Edward Folkerts, 66, Mitchell, died Friday, May 28, 2010, at Sanford Hospice Cottage, Sioux Falls.

A private graveside service will be on Wednesday. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Will Funeral Chapel, Mitchell.

He was born on May 4, 1944, in Mitchell to William T. and Helen (Traut) Folkerts.

He grew up south of Mitchell, where he attended country school.

He graduated from Mitchell High School and joined the National Guard after graduation. He served as a member of the 147th Artillery Unit for six years.

He also farmed and graduated from Missouri River Auction School at age 18.

He worked as an auctioneer at the Corsica and Mitchell livestock barns.

On Nov. 9, 1968, he married Cynthia Wendelboe.

The couple moved to a farm south of Mitchell and farmed for many years.

In 1982, he received his real estate license and moved to Mitchell in 1983. He continued to farm and worked as a real estate associate at Musick and Associates.

In 1984, he graduated from River Basin Auction School in North Dakota and began auctioning at Musick. He received his real estate broker’s license in 1989 and established Folkerts Realty and Auction Co. in 1991.

He worked in real estate and auctioning for almost 25 years until his retirement.

He was a member of South Dakota Auctioneers Association, National Auctioneers Association and National Association of Realtors. He served a term as president of Mitchell Board of Realtors and was named realtor of the year in 1990.

He is survived by his wife, four children: Becky and Lori, both of Sioux Falls; Jennifer Falor and husband Jim; and Jeffrey, all of Mitchell; two grandsons, two brothers: William and wife Kaye, Watertown; and Robert, Mitchell; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Terry Wendelboe and wife Lila, Spirit Lake, Iowa; and Sharon Vosika and husband Lyle, Winner; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law.
