Robert Morgan, Sioux Falls

Robert E. Morgan, 85, Sioux Falls, formerly of Mitchell, died Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, at Waterford At All Saints Assisted Living, Sioux Falls.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mitchell. Burial, with military honors, will be in Calvary Cemetery, Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bittner Funeral Chapel, Mitchell, with a 7 p.m. rosary service.

He was born on Aug. 13, 1924, in Mitchell to Chester L. and Phyllis (Saterlie) Morgan.

He grew up in Mitchell and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1942.

He studied pre-law at Creighton University, Omaha, Neb., after which he served in the Pacific Theater as a radioman in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He was awarded the Soldiers’ Medal for bravery.

He completed his education following his discharge and received his law degree from University of South Dakota, Vermillion, in 1950.

In October 1950, he married Mary Doyle of Yankton.

She died in 1971.

He later married MaryAnn Vermeulen.

He joined his father’s firm of Morgan and Fuller, now Morgan Theeler, and served there for more than 27 years.

He was elected to the Supreme Court of South Dakota in 1976 and served on the Supreme Court until his retirement in 1991.

Following his retirement, he lived in Vermillion and later Sioux Falls.

He is survived by five children: Mary Alice; and Tom and wife Susan, all of Sioux Falls; Mike and wife Kathy; and Maggie, all of San Diego; and Dan, Oakland, Calif.; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a brother, Jack and wife Nancy, Niles, Mich.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, an infant daughter, Elizabeth; his parents and an infant sister, Constance.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to USD Law School, Vermillion.
