Evelyn M. Johnson, 81, Carthage, died Thursday, July 23, 2009, at Avera De Smet Memorial Hospital, De Smet.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Christ, Carthage, with burial in Pleasantview Cemetery, Carthage. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at Willoughby Funeral Home, Howard.

Evelyn Mae Bushman was born Jan. 19, 1928, on a farmstead near Fedora to Roy and Alvina (Johannsen) Bushman. She was raised in the Fedora area, where she attended a country school.

She married Albert Johnson Jr. on Jan. 16, 1947, at Pipestone, Minn.

They made their home in Carthage, where she worked at different cafes and also was an assistant cook at the Carthage School.

She was a Gold Star mother, as she lost her son, Roy, in Vietnam. Her husband died April 5, 1983.

She is survived by her daughter, Gloria Anderson, and Gloria’s husband, Allen, St. Charles, Ill.; one granddaughter; a sister, Irene Sneesby, Sturgis; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Roy; a daughter, Betty Anderson; three brothers: Alvin, Edward and Wilbur; and two sisters: Donnamae Pederson and Vivian Barhydt.
