Bernice Tietgen, 85, Herrick, died Saturday, June 13, 2009, at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls.Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Clausen Funeral Home, Burke. Burial will be in Herrick Cemetery, Herrick. There will be a 7 p.m. prayer service today at the funeral home.

She was born on April 9, 1924, on the family farm in rural Bonesteel to Frank and Rose (Herman) McKenzie.
She attended a country school and later a boarding school throughout her teenage years.
During World War II, she worked in an ammunition factory in Grand Island, Neb.
She also worked as a teacher’s aide in the Bonesteel School during the 1970s.
In 1948, she married Ben Tietgen.
They lived on several farms during the first years of their marriage, finally settling on the homeplace, where she remained the rest of her life.
She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, rural Herrick.
She is survived by four daughters: Anita Allyn and husband Larry, St. Charles; Roxine Merrills and husband Russ; Shirley Cole and husband Mike, all of Herrick; and Pamela Hitchcock and husband Vernon, South Burke; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, two sisters: Neomi Schepp, Cheyenne, Wyo.; and Norma Jean Lucht, Grand Island, Neb.; and many nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Rex; a granddaughter, her parents, and seven siblings: Viola Warner, Reuben McKenzie, Richard McKenzie, Patrick Mckenzie, Ethel Hanson, Darlene Ellston and Carl McKenzie.
