(Sun) dog days of winter


A sundog looms in the sky Thursday morning south of Mitchell. Sundogs, or mock suns, occur as bright spots on either side of the sun during cold days when hexagonal ice crystals refract sunlight. Depending on the angle of the ice crystals, a halo, like the one here, can also be seen connecting the sundogs. (Chris Huber/Republic)
