Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day

Phil Braeger, of Watertown, center, talked with others from the northeastern South Dakota delegation of Vietnam veterans as they signed up to testify Wednesday on legislation that would designate March 30 as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day in South Dakota. The prime sponsor of SB 83 is Sen. Ried Holien, R-Watertown, far left. The Senate State Affairs Committee unanimously endorsed the legislation. The day would be a working holiday, meaning state government would remain open. The legislation was amended from the original version that would have designated March 29. That was the date when the last U.S. troops left Vietnam. They crossed the international dateline during their trips, making it March 30. (Bob Mercer/Republic)
