Plankinton High School senior Taylor Kinyon explains her project, titled “Safe Scan,” Tuesday afternoon at the South Central South Dakota Regional Science and Engineering Fair at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell. Kinyon created a steering wheel cover that recognizes when two hands are on the wheel to help reduce distracted driving. Kinyon’s project was one of three picked from more than 150 entries to win a $10,000 DWU scholarship and advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, Pa. The other two Senior Grand Award projects were “Cutting Down Crude: An Ingenious Concept,” by Justin Krell, of Plankinton, and “Using Colorimetry to Monitor Nickel Contamination in Water,” by Emily Mudder and Alyson Roth, of Avon. A full list of award winners will be published in a future edition. (Chris Huber/Republic)
