BACK IN TIME: Aerial ladder truck

The city of Mitchell voted to purchase a 1955 American LaFrance 85-foot aerial ladder truck in the summer of 1955 for $36,750. It was financed through a bond approved on July 18, 1955. It arrived in Mitchell from Elmira, N.Y., via railroad car on Feb. 21, 1956, and was tested before the deal was finalized. The new truck reportedly pumped 1,000 gallons of water a minute. The truck was retired from service in 1983. (Photo courtesy Mitchell Area Historical Society)
