Winner resident learned to appreciate all thingsWINNER — When Walter Schramm reflects on the Great Depression, he remembers tough times and a lot of moving throughout Gregory County. He also remembers his mother, Bertha, always had food on the table, no matter how dire the family’s economic condition.
“Even if we didn’t have anything, she could make something out of nothing,” Schramm said. “When we came home from school, she had the table set full.”
Schramm said he harbors no angry feelings about his early years. He, like many others, simply bore the burden of the times and emerged with an appreciation for all things. Updated: 12/10/08 9:39am
