Opinion: South Dakota Editorial Roundup

The season of drunken-driving accidents may be starting. A variety of factors contribute to tragedy at this time of year, like end of school parties and graduations. But there are some factors in South Dakota that make our situation even worse. Regrettably, it often starts with alcohol. Nationwide, about 40 percent of all car accidents involve alcohol, but the percentage is almost 10 percent higher in South Dakota. There is a culture of alcohol in our state, most notably on the reservations, but also the rest of the state. Alcohol consumption statewide per capita is greater than the national average.
