Mitchell senior Seth Cavanaugh was named to the all-Eastern South Dakota Conference first team.

The all-conference selections are voted on by ESD coaches and they can’t vote for their own players.

“I’m happy for him because he had to battle through health issues during the year and he was a real key to the victories we had this year,” Mitchell coach Tom Young said. “He was a great leader out on the floor and has athleticism.”

The senior led the Mitchell High School boys’ basketball team in scoring, averaging 13.8 points per game this season.

The 6-foot-3 guard had a season-high 25 points, a mark he hit twice during the season. His first 25-point performance was in Mitchell’s first victory of the season against Rapid City Central on Dec. 14 at the Corn Palace.

Cavanaugh’s second was against Sioux Falls O’Gorman during the Mike Miller Classic Dec. 29 at the Corn Palace.

The Kernels, who finished the season 5-17, also had a player earn honorable mention honors in Beau Brown, who was the only sophomore to earn all-conference honors.

“Beau was put in a tough spot with starting at point guard, which can add some extra pressure,” Young said. “He progressed throughout the year and if he continues to work very hard and improve his game, the future is really bright. The fact that he made this team will spur him one and help him to realize his potential.”

Brown averaged 12.5 points per game and started in all 22 games for the Kernels.

This was the first all-conference award for both players.

“This is a tribute to both players that the other coaches thought they were worthy of these awards,” Young said.
