Two area players earned spots all-tournament team status at the state boys’ basketball tournaments this weekend.

Platte-Geddes’ Coby Johnson was selected in the Class A tournament in Rapid City and South Central’s Tyler Frank was named to the team in the Class B tournament in Aberdeen.

Johnson averaged a double-double in the tournament, recording 18.3 points per game and 10 rebounds per game. He scored his tournament-high 24 points in Platte-Geddes’ first-round upset win over top-seeded Clark/Willow Lake Thursday.

Frank averaged 18.7 points per game and 8.6 rebounds per game in the tournament. He scored his tournament-high 20 points against Dupree in the third-place game Saturday.

Spirit of Six

The South Central cheerleading squad won the Spirit of Six award at the Class B state boys’ basketball tournament this weekend.

The Cougar cheer coach Deb Indahl said winning the award was a “dream come true.”

“When they called our name the girls were astounded and shocked,” Indahl said. “We have an amazing cheer program and not just with these girls but the groups before them. This was a community effort and it’s a great honor to take home to our community.”

Members of the Cougars cheerleading group are senior Teresa Opbroek, freshman Olivia Reiser, senior Caitlyn Mayer, freshman Hannah Karbo, sophomore Ashlyn McCarthy and senior Tori Vogt.

“When you go somewhere, you represent your school and community, and that’s what the basketball team and cheer girls did,” Indahl said. “We’re amazingly proud of them.”

Aberdeen Roncalli won the award for Class A and Rapid City Central was the Spirit of Six winner in Class AA.

Spirit of Su

James Valley Christian’s Adam Hofer was awarded the Spirit of Su award in the Class B tournament.

The award is given to one senior from each state tournament.

Tea Area’s Conner Shaull won the Spirit of Su award in Class A. Brandon Valley’s Chase Marso won the award at the Class AA tournament in Sioux Falls.
