Friday evening, members of Friend de Coup were decorating the Corn Palace, preparing “home rooms” for the more than 20 high school show choirs that will compete today in the Mitchell Show Choir Classic.
Mitchell High School show choir director Chris Miller said the competition will start at 8:30 a.m. and last all day, with final rounds starting at 6:30 p.m.
In addition to the competition, Miller said both of Mitchell Middle School’s show choirs, Exclamation and Maximum Velocity, Joyful Noise from John Paul II and the L.B. Williams fifth-grade show choir all will perform.
Tickets to attend all day are $12 for adults or $8 for K-12 students; to attend just the finals is $8 for adults and $5 for K-12.
To round out the day, Miller said Friend de Coup will take the stage at around 9:45 p.m. It’s an especially fun day for the MHS show choir members, Miller said, because they don’t “have to worry about the things that go into competing.” Friend de Coup, as the even host, does not compete for awards.
“They can just have fun and enjoy all these show choirs that are there and then go give an amazing performance at the end of it all,” he said. “It’s quite an event, and I think it’s a really good thing for Mitchell.”
The classic leads into Friend de Coup’s dinner theater, which will be Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Corn Palace.
Titled “FDC: It’s Iconic,” the show will feature well-known music from the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s from artists like Frank Sinatra, U2 and Jon Bon Jovi.
Miller said the weekday shows start at 6:30 p.m., while the Saturday performance starts at 5 p.m. Tickets are $20 and are available at the Corn Palace box office at 995-8430.
