State tournament roundup: Brandon Valley, Roosevelt, Lincoln, Pierre advance at Class AA

SIOUX FALLS (AP) — Nic Peterson scored 20 points to lead Brandon Valley to a 62-29 win over Huron Thursday in the first round of the South Dakota boys Class AA basketball tournament.

Brandon Valley 62, Huron 29

SIOUX FALLS (AP) — Nic Peterson scored 20 points to lead Brandon Valley to a 62-29 win over Huron Thursday in the first round of the South Dakota boys Class AA basketball tournament.

Peterson and the Lynx (17-6) broke down Huron (16-8) from the inside, outscoring the Tigers 30-12 in the paint.

Peterson made eight of nine shots and Brandon Valley shot 53 percent from the field. It outscored Huron 27-9 in the second half.

Jacob Adams had 10 points for the Lynx.

The Tigers shot just 19 percent in the second half and missed all five three-pointers. Justin Decker led Huron in scoring with 12 points.

SF Roosevelt 73, Rapid City Stevens 43

SIOUX FALLS (AP) — Brandon Boggs had 23 point to lead Sioux Falls Roosevelt over Rapid City Stevens 73-43 in the first round of the South Dakota boys Class AA basketball tournament on Thursday.

Boggs was 8-for-11 from the field to lead four Rough Riders (22-1) into double figures. He was joined by Colton Kooima, who had five three-pointers and 15 points, Tyler Howard with 13 points and Nate Cole with 12.

Howard led all rebounders with seven.

The Rough Riders, whose only loss this season is to a team from Marshall, Minn., shot 49 percent from the field. They outscored the Knights 36-12 from in the paint.

RCS (10-14) got 13 points from Steven Schaeffer and 10 from Brett Bennett.

Sioux Falls Lincoln 53, Brookings 48

SIOUX FALLS (AP) — Adam Jaros scored 16 points as Sioux Falls Lincoln defeated Brookings 53-48 on Thursday during the first round of the South Dakota Class AA basketball tournament.

Jaros made eight of nine free throws and had two three-pointers for the Patriots (13-11). Joining him in double figures was Addison Park with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Tyler Nagy was equally effective from the line for Brookings, hitting nine of 10 attempts for 16 points. He was only 3-for-14 from the field and 1-for-7 from the line. Kaleb Vig added 13 points.

Neither team shot well from the field. Lincoln hit 38 percent for the game and 29 percent from three-point range. Brookings (17-8) shot 34 percent overall and 22 percent on three-pointers.

This is Lincoln’s 31st appearance at the tournament.

Pierre 60, Rapid City Central 47

SIOUX FALLS (AP) — Zach Hanson poured in 30 points to lead Pierre T.F. Riggs to a 60-47 victory over Rapid City Central on Thursday in the first round of the South Dakota Class AA basketball tournament.

Hanson hit 14 of 20 field goal attempts and grabbed seven rebounds for the No. 2 seeded Governors (18-5). Lane Severyn added a double-double, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

The Cobblers (10-12) were led by Nathan Miller with 12 points. John Fierro added 12 and Jessie Riddle hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11.

Class A tournament

Tea Area 60, Spearfish 53

RAPID CITY — The fifth-seeded Titans made their first venture to the Class A state boys’ basketball tournament a successful one after a hard-fought 60-53 win over fourth-seed Spearfish in Thursday’s opening round.

Tea Area advances to today’s championship semifinals to face eighth-seed Platte-Geddes, which stunned tournament top-seed Clark/Willow Lake on Thursday.

Tea Area took control late in the fourth when Spearfish closed to a single point 51-50 on a putback from Blaine Bacon.Connor Schaull scored five straight points to give the Titans a cushion, including a 3-pointer to finish with 23 points.

Spearfish couldn’t convert on four free tosses down the stretch and finished 7-of-17 overall from the line, while Tea Area got a pair of free throws and an exclamation point layup from Riley Knutson to pull away. The Spartans also gave up 20 turnovers to Tea Area’s 17.

Kemp led Spearfish with 16 points, Dillon Orth added 15 points and Bacon 12. Zach Olson grabbed 10 rebounds for the Spartans, which trailed 30-24 at the half, but tied the game at 38 after falling behind by as many as 10 in the first half.

Madison 70, Pine Ridge 34

RAPID CITY — Third-seeded Madison defeated sixth-seeded Pine Ridge 70-34 in the first round of the Class A state tournament in Rapid City.

Tyler Wiebe scored a team-high 15 points and Rush Milne and Jesse Brown each scored 10 points. Madison was 26-of-58 from the field and 18-of-23 from the foul line. The Bulldogs outrebounded Pine Ridge 45-22.

Pine Ridge was led by Jeff LeBeau with 16 points. Pine Ridge was 14-of-42 from the field and 4-of-15 from the free-throw line.

Mobridge-Pollack plays Madison at 8:45 p.m. today, while Roncalli plays Pine Ridge at 2:45 p.m. today.

Class B tournament

White River 51, Langford Area 33

ABERDEEN (AP) — Defending state champion White River kept its perfect record against state teams alive Thursday with a 51-33 win over Langford Area in the first round of the South Dakota boys Class B basketball tournament.

Joe Cameron and Wyatt Krogman had 14 points each for the Tigers, who took the first steps toward a sixth straight championship game appearance. Matthew Gillen added 10 points.

The Tigers (23-1) are seeking their fourth title since 2008. Their only loss of the season was to a team from Minneapolis.

The Lions (19-5) still have not allowed more than 59 points in a game and held White River way below its average of 89 points.

Drew Planteen had 12 points and Bo Fries 11 for Langford Area.

Dupree 71, Arlington 63

ABERDEEN (AP) — Nate Widow’s 34 points capped his all-around game that helped Dupree come back from a halftime deficit to beat Arlington 71-63 on Thursday in the first round of the South Dakota Class B basketball tournament.

Widow also had eight rebounds and five assists for the Tigers (23-1), who trailed the Cardinals 37-32 at halftime. Widow was 15-for-28 shooting with three three-pointers.

Kash Deal chipped in 12 points for Dupree, which shot 45 percent.

Andrew King scored a team-high 19 points for Arlington (17-5). Zach Warnke added 13 points and 14 rebounds, while Cole VanBockern grabbed 10 boards.

Viborg-Hurley 55,

James Valley Christian 47 (OT)

ABERDEEN (AP) — Viborg-Hurley dominated in overtime to beat James Valley Christian 55-47 on Thursday in the first round of the South Dakota boys Class B basketball tournament.

The Cougars (22-2) led by three when James Valley Christian’s Adam Hofer caught a full-court pass and buried a three-pointer with a second left to play, sending the game into overtime.

Viborg-Hurley scored the first seven points in overtime, and ended up outscoring the Vikings 10-2 in OT.

Tyler Gerdes led the Cougars with 19 points, Andrew Hora added 13 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, and Jack Huether added 12 points. They outscored the Vikings 15-4 from the free throw line.

Hofer led James Valley Christian with 29 points.
