Teen cited in Delmont accident

DELMONT-- A 17-year-old Delmont male was cited for careless driving following a minor injury accident around 6:38 p.m. on U.S. Highway 18 about two miles east of the Delmont turnoff.

The accident, Highway Patrol Trooper Dan Podzimek said, was caused when the male juvenile, who was driving his three siblings in a 2004 Nissan van, reportedly attempted to make a U-turn in front of another van. The driver and his siblings were wearing seat belts.

The young man was taken to Douglas County Memorial Hospital in Armour where he was checked and released. His siblings were uninjured.

Podzimek, who declined to name the youth, said the driver pulled off the road when he realized he had forgotten an item at home. He was attempting a U-turn when the van was hit by a 2005 Dodge Caravan driven by D.Z. Iron Wing, 65, of Wagner.

“He said he didn’t see the van when he made the turn,” Podzimek said. Iron Wing slowed his van, Podzimek said, but he could not stop in time.

Iron Wing’s passenger Lillian Zephier, 64, also of Wagner, was taken to the Armour hospital where she was treated for minor injuries and released. Neither was wearing a seat belt.

Both vans had “significant damage,” Podzimek said.

Trooper Jason Brandt also responded, as did units from Armour Ambulance, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Delmont Fire Department.
