Mitchell High School senior Cole Morgan will officially join the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team today.
Morgan, a 5-foot-10 guard, said he wanted to continue playing basketball after high school, and playing for the Tigers is a tradition that runs in his family.
“I love basketball and I would have missed it a lot,” Morgan said Monday night. “I want to keep playing and keep getting better.”
Morgan’s father, Scott Morgan, attended DWU and was a two-time NAIA National Division II Player of the Year. He also was a two-time All-American in 1992 and 1993, and finished his career second in the school’s all-time scoring list with 2,810 points.
Wes Morgan, Cole’s uncle who’s now the Mitchell High School girls’ basketball coach, also attended DWU to play basketball. Cole Morgan had four aunts play for the Tigers, including Ronda, Robin, Raven and Randi.
“Being a Morgan and going to play basketball at DWU is a big deal for our family, but they didn’t pressure me to go there,” Cole Morgan said. “I just love the Corn Palace and playing in Mitchell.”
In his senior season this year, Cole Morgan averaged 9.5 points per game and played in all 22 games for the Kernels. His season-high was 25 points. He also scored 17 twice.
“He can really shoot the basketball and he’s going to be a great program kid for us,” DWU coach Shane Murphy said. “We’re excited to have him.”
Morgan will be the fourth Mitchell High School basketball player Murphy has signed in the past two years. Jade Miller, Matt Henriksen and Tate Martin, all 2012 Mitchell High School graduates, are members of the DWU basketball team.
