Six area players earn all-tournament team accolades

Three girls’ basketball teams won their school's first-ever state title over the weekend.
Sioux Falls Lincoln won the Class AA state title, defeating Mitchell in the final game. Harrisburg beat Pine Ridge for the Class A crown and Warner defeated De Smet to win the Class B championship.
In the three classes, six area girls’ basketball players earned all-tournament accolades.
Mitchell senior Kristin Sabers and junior Macy Miller were named to the Class AA all-tournament team. This is Miller’s second all-tournament honor and Sabers’ first.
Miller was Mitchell’s leading scorer with 14.3 points per game and seven rebounds per game in the tournament. Sabers averaged 12.3 points per game and 5.3 rebounds per game.
Chamberlain’s Jaymee Knippling was named to the Class A all-tournament team. Knippling was 10-of-22 for 46 percent from the field in the tournament and averaged 8.67 points per game.
Sanborn Central/Woonsocket’s Rachel Selland and Shelby Selland and Hanson’s Kynedi Cheeseman were named to the Class B all-tournament team.
Shelby Selland was the second-leading scorer in the tournament and averaged 16.33 points per game in three games. Rachel Selland averaged 9.67 points per game in the tournament.
Cheeseman averaged 10.67 points per game and 6.33 rebounds per game in the tournament.
Spirit of Six
The Sanborn Central/Woonsocket cheerleaders won the Spirit of Six award at the Class B tournament in Huron.
“It felt awesome and it’s quite the honor,” Blackhawks cheer coach Melissa Wormstadt said. “It was something that we were trying to work at all year.”
Members of the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket cheer squad are senior Tristen Wormstadt, sophomore Michele Carda, freshman Tamra Mann, eighth-grader Dana Opsahl and seventh-grader Ashleigh Fry.
This is the first Spirit of Six win for Sanborn Central/Woonsocket.
The West Central cheerleaders won the Spirit of Six in the Class A tournament, while Sioux Falls Washington won the award for Class AA.
Spirit of Su
Aberdeen Central’s Samantha Knecht, who was also named to the all-tournament team, won the Spirit of Su award in the Class AA tournament. Knecht will join the University of Sioux Falls women’s basketball team in the fall.
In the Class A tournament, the Spirit of Su award went to Pine Ridge’s Anissa Martin.
Warner’s Rachel Rogers won the award in Class B.
