HURON — For the second straight game, the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket girls’ basketball team used a big run in the second quarter en route to a win at the Class B state tournament.

Friday, the Blackhawks got past Timber Lake with ease after going on two big runs in the second quarter.

Saturday was no different as Sanborn Central/Woonsocket defeated Parker 67-48 to finish the state tournament in fifth place.

“We got after it offensively again,” SCW co-head coach Tim McCain said. “I am really proud of girls. I thought we played great defensively. … We were just dangerous all around, we have a good inside player in Shelby and our perimeter players were knocking down shots.”

Leading19-8 at the end of the first quarter, SCW used an 11-2 run to take control of the game. SCW’s Shelby Selland scored eight points during that streak, while Marissa Weber made a 3-pointer. Selland finished with a game-high of 22 points.

Parker tried to keep it close with help from Micalanne Hanten, who knocked down two 3-pointers en route to scoring eight first-half points. The senior finished with 16 points on five of 19 shooting.

“I have said it all year, these girls don't know the word quit,” Warner coach Tami Jurgens said. “Sanborn Central/Woonsocket is very strong on the inside and they have some very talented players.”

During the first quarter, Rachelle Moore was the only player not named Selland to score a basket for Sanborn Central/Woonsocket. Moore had four points, while Rachel and Shelby Selland each had six and Morgan had three.

By game’s end, the Sellands accounted for 48 of the team’s 67 points. Myah, the fourth member of the Selland clan, did not score any points in the first quarter but finished the game with eight.

“It’s so awesome to play with your cousins,” Rachel Selland said. “We have a connection. … We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and that helps us on the court.”

Of the four, only Myah and Shelby are sisters, they share a grandfather, Doyle, with Rachel, while Morgan’s grandfather, Arlan, is brothers with Doyle.

With help from the Sellands, the Blackhawks were able to secure their second victory of the tournament.

Last year, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket finished in fourth place at the Class B state tournament, but won one of three games.

The Blackhawks lose three seniors in Moore, Morgan Larson and Candace Page-Marten.

But McCain said he is hopeful that his team can return and win three games at the state tournament next season.
