WATERTOWN — Despite having its best shooting performance of the Class A state tournament Saturday, the Chamberlain girls’ basketball lost in its final game of the weekend Saturday.
The Cubs were 22-of-65 from the field en route to falling to Sioux Falls Christian 67-58 in the seventh-place game at the state tournament in Watertown. The Cubs, in their first state trip since 2005, took eighth place.
“We came out, were able to score some points and played well early,” Chamberlain coach Jeff Neuharth said. “We just couldn’t get a stop when we needed one. We got into a lot better flow offensively, but we just needed to be a little better defensively.”
Three Chamberlain players scored in double figures.
Corrina Reuer led the Cubs with 16 points, Abbey Handel added 13 and Jaymee Knippling had 10 points and seven rebounds.
Sioux Falls Christian’s Haley McCarron led all scorers with 24 points. McCarron also finished with a game-high 12 rebounds.
“I thought the effort from the girls was great, Neuharth said. “I couldn’t be more pleased with how well we competed.”
Chamberlain (21-4) ends its season with three straight losses after a 19-game win streak.
“We were disappointed with how this tournament went, but we still had a great season,” Neuharth said. “I am pleased with the kids and the way that they worked to accomplish what we have as a program this season.”
