Mitchell man arrested for home burglary

A Mitchell man was arrested Thursday for allegedly entering an occupied residence Feb. 25 in the 400 block of East Seventh Avenue and stealing numerous items.
Joshua Keith Wellnitz, 28, is charged with first-degree burglary and first-degree petty theft for allegedly entering the home during the night and stealing less than $100 in cash, a wristwatch, work boots, toothpaste, mouthwash, food, spices and cleaning products. The stolen items are valued at less than $1,000, according to a news release from the Mitchell Police Division.
Wellnitz used to live at the residence, the release says, and allegedly used a key he was given in the past to unlock the door during the alleged burglary.
First-degree burglary is a felony with a maximum punishment of 25 years in prison and a $50,000 fine. First-degree petty theft is a misdemeanor with a maximum punishment of one year in jail and a $2,000 fine.
Wellnitz posted a $750 bond and has been released from the Davison County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
