Sanborn Central-Woonsocket rolls to 73-45 win at state B

HURON — Sanborn Central/Woonsocket co-head coach Tim McCain said his ball club may have been fighting nerves Thursday when the Blackhawks fell to Sully Buttes in the first round of the Class B girls’ state tournament.

Those nerves appeared to be gone Friday, when the Blackhawks defeated Timber Lake 73-45 in the second round to move to the fifth-place game today.

“We were a little bit more relaxed and we did what we have been doing all year,” McCain said. “We hit the outside shot and got the ball inside.”

SCW (23-2) got off to a much quicker start than its previous two games. The Blackhawks were led by Shelby Selland with 18 points.

She helped the team to a quick start. Instead of falling behind early and attempting to rally, the Blackhawks were in control from the beginning.

In the first four minutes, SCW was sporting a 9-2 lead with the help of Marissa Weber, who knocked down a 3-pointer during that span.

Timber Lake went on a 5-0 run of its own in the first quarter to pull within two points of the Blackhawks with baskets from Kristie Mettler and Callie Lawrence.

Mettler scored 10 first-quarter points and finished with 17. The senior guard gave the SCW backcourt some trouble early and recorded six steals.

But Timber Lake, which doesn’t have a single player on its roster above 6-foot, seemed to struggle with the Blackhawks’ height and length in the front court.

“I thought Sanborn Central/Woonsocket played a really good game,” Timber Lake coach Chris Hettick said. “We had to pick our poison and their guards made us pay. They did a good job of getting the ball down low and got some open shots for their perimeter scorers.”

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket used two more runs during the second quarter to put more distance in the score. The first was a 7-2 run highlighted by a Morgan Selland 3-pointer.

The second was a 10-2 run led by Shelby Selland, who scored all 10 of the points during the streak and had 16 points at halftime.

“I thought we played really well,” Shelby Selland said. “We moved the ball well and played as a team. … We wanted to come back from (Thursday) and show everybody that we can play.”

By halftime, the Blackhawks were comfortably ahead 41-19, but that didn’t stop SCW’s Weber and Rachelle Moore.

Weber scored five quick points to start the third quarter and finished with 17. The junior connected on five of her eight 3-pointers. Moore, a senior, narrowly missed recording a double-double for the Blackhawks. The senior guard finished with nine points and nine rebounds.

With the win, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket advances to play Parker in the fifth-place game at 1:45 p.m. today in Huron.
