Catching up: Borks help UNI at Missouri Valley Conference meet

Mitchell natives Reva and Rhennetta Bork competed in the Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Feb. 14-16 held on the campus of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill.

Both sophomores for the University of Northern Iowa swimming and diving team, Reva and Rhenetta combined for six top-20 finishes in the meet.

Reva Bork took 12th in the 1,650-yard freestyle, 13th in the 400-yard individual medley and 19th in the 500-yard freestyle.

Rhennetta Bork finished 15th in the 400-yard individual medley and 17th in both the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard breaststroke.

In addition, Reva and Rhennetta were two of nine members of the UNI swim team named to the Missouri Valley Conference scholar-athlete team. As biochemistry majors, both Reva and Rhennetta have above a 3.9 cumulative GPA.

- April Winne and Kela Cihak both earned Great Plains Athletic Conference women’s basketball all-conference honors, the conference announced Feb. 27.

Winne, a Scotland graduate and junior for Mount Marty, earned first-team honors for the Lancers after averaging 12 points per game and leading the GPAC in assists per game at 3.8. The Lancers finished the season 16-14.

Cihak, a former Avon Pirate, earned honorable-mention honors for the No. 14-ranked Briar Cliff Chargers. Cihak, a senior, averaged nine points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game for the Chargers (23-9, 13-7 GPAC). Cihak also recently scored her 1,000th career point in the final regular season game for the Chargers on Feb. 16 against Dakota Wesleyan University at the Corn Palace.

Briar Cliff plays in the first round of the NAIA national tournament at 5:15 p.m. today against Siena Heights University at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

- Jayd Docken, a sophomore wrestler for Augustana College, will be one of two Viking wrestlers to compete in the NCAA Championships Friday and Saturday in Birmingham, Ala.

Docken, a Winner native, is currently ranked fifth at 197 pounds in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches’ Association poll. Docken qualified for the national championships for the second straight season after a third-place finish at the Super Region 3 tournament on Feb. 24. Docken went 4-1 at the super regional to move his season record to 21-5.

- Mitchell native and Dakota State senior Stephanie Uher took 15th place in the 600-meter run at the NAIA track and field national championships on Saturday in Geneva, Ohio, with a time of 1:38.33. Uher also qualified for the women’s 800-meter but did not place in the event.
