SD ambulance driver falls asleep, crashes into pickup

PIEDMONT (AP) — Authorities say an EMT who was tending to patients was injured when an ambulance driver fell asleep and crashed into an abandoned pickup truck on Interstate 90 in South Dakota.

PIEDMONT (AP) — Authorities say an EMT who was tending to patients was injured when an ambulance driver fell asleep and crashed into an abandoned pickup truck on Interstate 90 in South Dakota.

The Highway Patrol says the accident happened about 5 a.m. Tuesday near the Piedmont exit on I-90. The EMT was ejected from the vehicle. Authorities say she was transported to the Rapid City hospital with severe, non-life threatening injuries.

Three other people were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Authorities say the ambulance was transporting patients from Eagle Butte to the Rapid City hospital.

KOTA-TV reports that the ambulance was totaled.
