ABERDEEN — Freshman Tevyn Waddell led the Mitchell Aquatic Club breaking six state records at the South Dakota State Swim Meet last weekend in Aberdeen.
MAC finished seventh and was nine points behind the Sioux Falls Seals for sixth. Sioux Falls Snowfox won the meet, while Pierre took second and Aberdeen was third.
One of the six state records Waddell, who competes in the 13-14 girls’ age group, shattered was a 20-year-old record in the 100 freestyle. The record was set at 53.21 seconds and Waddell’s time was 52.93, leading off race.
Waddell won six titles coming in the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 1,000 freestyle, 1,650 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke. She took second in the 400 individual medley and won the overall high-point award for her age group.
Senior Isaac Smith, who competes in the 17-19 boys’ age group, won two events including the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke. Smith also brought home one second-place finish, one third, two fifths and one sixth-place finish.
Christian Fossum won the 200 butterfly in the 15-16 boys’ age group, beating the 11-year-old MAC team record by five seconds. Fossum took second in three events and third in one.
Ethan Huber, who competes in the 11-12 boys’ age group, took second in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 50 backstroke and 100 backstroke. He was third in the 500 freestyle and fifth in the 200 freestyle.
Karlie Brown, 15, took second in the 100 breaststroke and 400 individual medley. She also brought home one third and fifth-place finish. Cailey Scott, 12, took second in the 100 backstroke, third in the 500 freestyle and fifth in the 100 butterfly.
Waddell, Smith and Fossum compete at the Speedo Sectional Meet in Waukesha, Wis., which begins Thursday and ends Sunday. The meet is regional with swimmers from Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, South Dakota and North Dakota.
