Rapid City's downtown ice rink revenues climb in short season

RAPID CITY (AP) — Despite a shortened ice-skating season, revenue is up at the downtown ice rink in Rapid City's Main Street Square.

Square officials say the rink made more than $101,000 this winter, compared to $86,000 in its first season last year. To get there, the ice-skating rink rented 13,000 pairs of skates and sold 18,000 day passes in the 2012-13 season.

Square director Megan Karbowski tells the media that the rink has increased its staffing and is open more hours. The rink's peak time was around the holidays, when it collected 60 percent of its revenue.

To boost weekday and non-holiday traffic, the rink organized activities such as Saturday's beach-themed party, which drew about 400 skaters of all ages.

The rink is part of a downtown revitalization project.
