MHS show choir takes first in Vermillion
Director says Friend de Coup is ‘improving exponentially.’By: Ross Dolan, The Daily Republic
Mitchell High School’s Friend de Coup show choir is on a roll.
The top-ranked choir showed its stuff in at the Rhythm in Red Invitational show choir competition Saturday in Vermillion.
“We competed against the best show choirs from South Dakota and we got a sweep,” FDC Director Chris Miller said.
In addition to Grand Champion honors, Mitchell also won for best vocals, best choreography and best band.
Sioux Falls Washington High School took second place; Sioux City East High School, third; Sioux Falls O’Gorman, fourth; Emmetsburg (Iowa) High School, fifth.
Miller estimated 15 to 20 groups participated.
The MHS competition set was created by choreographer Stephen Todd; arranger Heath Ewing; and Miller — all former MHS grads and members of the show choir program.
“We’ve worked together closely as a creative team since 2007,” Miller said. “Stephen handles the visuals; I take care of vocals; and getting the music down on paper is Heath’s job.”
This coming weekend FDC will compete in the Totino-Grace Show Choir Spectacular in Fridley, Minn., and the following weekend FDC will compete at the Wheaton-Warrenville South Choral Classic near Chicago.
Miller believes FDC is peaking at the right time.
“This (Vermillion competition) was a great weekend for us,” he said. “I feel we’re in a position where we’re constantly improving exponentially.”
