Otterby lectures begin Wednesday at SDSU

BROOKINGS — The first Dr. Donald E. Otterby Lecture will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Alfred Dairy Science Hall, Room 100, on the South Dakota State University campus.

The invited speaker, Jim Linn, professor emeritus from the University of Minnesota, will address the topic: “The Future of Dairying in the Context of Contemporary Agricultural Constraints.”

Donald E. Otterby was raised on a dairy farm near Crooks.

An alumnus of South Dakota State University, Otterby received his bachelor’s of science in 1954 and completed his master’s degree in dairy production from South Dakota State University in 1958.

He then received his Ph.D. in animal nutrition from North Carolina State University.

In 1963, Otterby joined the animal science department of the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, as a faculty member. Before his death in October 2012, Otterby created an endowment to fund a dairy science teaching enrichment program which includes a lectureship series.

The speaker, Linn, is a nationally known dairy expert who served as department head of animal science at the University of Minnesota from June 2007 until his retirement in September 2011.

He earned his Ph.D. in dairy cattle nutrition from the University of Minnesota in 1978, working under Otterby’s guidance, and was on the faculty at Iowa State University as Extension dairy specialist from 1978 to 1979 before returning to Minnesota as an Extension dairy nutritionist with research, teaching and Extension responsibilities.
