Area basketball roundup 2/22/13: SC/W, Chamberlain, Lyman win district championships

HURON — Sanborn Central/Woonsocket advances to the Region 5B game with an 81-43 win over James Valley Christian to claim the District 9B championship Thursday.

Morgan Selland and Rachelle Moore each scored 14 points for the Blackhawks, while Rachel Selland and Shelby Selland scored 12 points apiece in the win. Marissa Weber and Myah Selland each grabbed six rebounds for SCW. Myah Selland recorded eight assists while Moore and Candace Page-Marten recorded five each. Weber also had 10 points.

SCW went 34-of-62 from the floor and made 6-of-9 free throws while pulling down 35 team rebounds. The Blackhawks committed 13 team turnovers to JVC’s 14.

Jaclyn Loban led JVC’s offense with 16 points, while Tara Nihart scored 11. Hannah Loban recorded five steals and Jaclyn Loban had five assists.

JVC shot 17-of-51 from the field and 2-of-10 from the free-throw line. The Vikings end the season 11-10.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (21-1) plays in the Region 5B game against the winner of the District 10B tournament March 1 in Huron.

Mitchell Christian plays Kimball/White Lake for the District 10B title.

Chamberlain 54, Crow Creek 26

MILLER — Logan Pickner recorded a double-double in Chamberlain’s 54-26 District 12A championship win over Crow Creek Thursday.

Pickner scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Cubs. Alex Pederson scored 13 points and Kennedy Wagner added 12 points. Corrina Reuer grabbed nine rebounds. Abby Handel, Pederson and Wagner each recorded four assists in the win.

Chamberlain shot 19-of-48 from the floor and 6-of-10 from the free-throw line and recorded 43 team rebounds and 14 turnovers. Chamberlain is 20-1 and plays Cheyenne-Eagle Butte in the Region 6A championship game March 1 in Gettysburg.

Tracy HeCrow scored 10 points for Crow Creek, which shot 11-of-17 from the free-throw line. Crow Creek ends its season 7-12.

Oldham-Ramonda/Rutland 52, Howard 44

RAMONA — The Howard girls’ basketball team ends its season with a 52-44 loss to Oldham-Ramona/Rutland in a District 4B semifinal game Thursday.

BreeAna Olson scored 24 for ORR, which shot 21-of-59 from the field and 9-of-12 from the free-throw line.

Kelsey Dawson led Howard’s scoring with 18 points and McKenna Rudebusch scored 10. The Tigers shot 17-of-50 from the field and made 10 free throws on 13 attempts.

Dawson grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the team. Howard ends its season with a 6-16 record.

West Central 59, Tri-Valley 51

SALEM — West Central was crowned the District 9A champions Thursday with a 59-51 upset win over Tri-Valley.

Kylie Hanisch scored 17 points to lead the Trojans. Hunter Mathieu scored 14 points and Madison Kuehl had 11 points. Hanisch grabbed seven rebounds. Ali Lacey had seven steals.

West Central shot 18-of-51 from the field and 20-of-36 from the free-throw line and totaled 29 team rebounds and nine turnovers.

Allison Cross socred 22 points for Tri-Valley and Sammy Kasowski had 12 points, 15 rebounds and six assists.

Tri-Valley shot 17-of-42 from the field and 13-of-25 from the free-throw line. The Mustangs totaled 36 team rebounds and 24 turnovers.

West Central (17-5) plays Parkston in the Region 5A championship, while Tri-Valley ends its season 18-4.

Boys’ Basketball

South Central 49, Avon 36

BURKE — South Central’s Tyler Frank scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Cougars over Avon 49-36 in the final regular season game for both teams Thursday.

Josh Tuttle scored 10 points for South Central, which was 19-of-46 from the field, 5-of-10 from the free-throw line and had nine turnovers. South Central won the rebounding battle 24-22 and won the JV game 29-15.

Avon’s Brandon Kocmich had 18 points.

The Pirates were 13-of-36 from the field, 8-of-11 from the foul line and had 14 turnovers.

South Central (18-2) plays in the District 12B semifinals Tuesday in Burke, while Avon (6-14) plays Ethan at the Corn Palace Tuesday in the District 11B semifinals.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton 63, Hanson 60

MOUNT VERNON — Jared Long scored 17 points to lead Mount Vernon/Plankinton over Hanson 63-60 in the final regular season game for both teams Thursday.

Deric Denning scored 15 points for the Titans, who end the regular season at 13-7. Cote Hinker added 12 points in the win. MVP shot 21-of-47 from the field and 16-of-20 from the free-throw line.

Nick Lawson led the Titans’ defense with nine rebounds and Hinker added seven. MVP totaled 27 team rebounds and committed 13 turnovers. Long recorded five assists in the win.

Matt Huber was Hanson’s leading scorer with 24 points, while Jordan Marquardt scored 11. The Beavers went 24-of-43 from the field and made 10 free throws on 17 times at the line.

The Beavers tallied 23 team rebounds, led by Huber with six, and turned the ball over nine times.

MVP plays in the first round of the District 10A tournament Tuesday. Hanson ends the regular season at 14-6 and plays in the semi-final round of the District 11B tournament Tuesday at the Corn Palace.

Corsica/Stickney 51, Kimball/White Lake 48

Corsica/Stickney finished the regular season with a 51-48 win over Kimball/White Lake Thursday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

Austin Tilton scored 21 points for the Jaguars, who went 23-of-56 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Adam Bormann added 10 points and recorded five assists.

Corsica/Stickney and KWL each grabbed 24 team rebounds, but the Jaguars turned the ball over only seven times while the WiLdKats recorded nine.

Willie Norwood scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds for KWL. Jesse Taylor added 10 points. KWL shot 20-of-44 from the field and went 3-of-6 from the free-throw line.

Corsica/Stickney is 13-7 and Kimball/White Lake is 14-5 going into District 10B tournament play, which begins Thursday at the Corn Palace.
