PIERRE — Rep. Stace Nelson presented the POW/MIA working holiday legislation to the Senate State Affairs Committee.
Nelson, R-Fulton, is the bill’s prime sponsor. He said Sen. Bill Van Gerpen, R-Tyndall, was sick Wednesday. Van Gerpen, the bill’s lead sponsor in the Senate, hasn’t attended the legislative session the past two days.
The Senate committee voted unanimously to endorse the bill, HB 1067, which now goes to the full Senate for the consent calendar for final legislative approval today. The consent calendar is automatic approval unless a senator objects. The bill would designate the third Thursday of September.
The Senate State Affairs Committee gave its unanimous approval to HB 1084, which would designate Aug. 7 as Purple Heart recognition day. “Let us honor these heroes,” said Sen. David Omdahl, R-Sioux Falls, the lead sponsor of the bill in the Senate.
“One of the values or benefits in doing something like this is it’s educational,” said Sen. Corey Brown, R-Gettysburg, who was a Navy officer and flyer.
The bill was put on the Senate consent calendar, for final legislative approval today.
