A 20-year-old Mitchell man faces multiple charges for allegedly stealing a vehicle and crashing it into a local business.

According to court documents, Mitchell police received a stolen vehicle report on Feb. 7 from the 1100 block of East Second Avenue, and the vehicle was later found to have hit the Wise Tire & Implement building at 519 S. Sanborn Blvd.

In the early morning hours of Feb. 8, Robert Keith Kennedy Jr. was found intoxicated at Best Western and was talking about the crash without being asked, court documents say.

Kennedy later allegedly admitted to police on Feb. 13 that a hat found at the scene of the crash belonged to him.

Kennedy is charged with grand theft, a felony with a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

He is also charged with reckless driving, criminal entry of a motor vehicle and failure to provide proper information at a property damage accident, each of which is a misdemeanor with a maximum punishment of one year in jail and a $2,000 fine.

He is scheduled to appear in court today for a preliminary hearing.
